Farmworker Awareness Week Update!
The Taco Bell Boycott is over! Congratulations to all of us who
supported the campaign. Are you wondering what to do for FAW now that
the boycott is over? Dont worry, theres still plenty you can do!
Download the updated flier.
IDEAS:
Hold a celebration of the CIWs victory of the Taco Bell boycott and
hold a teach-in on how to support other farmworker campaigns.
The United Farm Workers union has a couple campaigns they want students
to work on:
For more than a year, Gallo of Sonoma farm workers have been laboring
without their United Farm Workers contract because the winemaking giant
refuses to negotiate a fair and just agreement. Late last year, the
state of California found Gallo of Sonoma guilty of illegally trying to
get rid of the union its workers have chosen.
Dairy workers at Threemile Canyon Farms have been struggling to get a
contract for the last 2 years. Workers have been the victims of
harassment, retaliation, discrimination and ongoing workplace abuse.
Sorrento Lactalis, maker of Precious and Sorrento brand cheeses,
currently receives milk produced by Threemile Canyon Farms. Sorrento
has refused to use its influence to help resolve this dispute despite
requests from Threemile Canyon Farms customers such as Safeway who has
called on Sorrento to sit down and negotiate in good faith with the
workers' union, the United Farm Workers.
Check out SAFs website and www.ufw.org for more info.
Hold general awareness-raising events about farmworkers, or pick a
specific topic-health, immigration, labor rights, access to education
and services.
Hold a Cesar Chavez Day celebration on March 31st commemorating the
farmworker leaders life and accomplishments. www.chavezfoundation.org
Here are a few universities plans for FAW:
Colorado State University is organizing a panel of migrant workers, and
other events involving music, food and a childrens corner.
University of South Florida is organizing an awareness day for all the
multicultural organizations on-campus in order to inform them about
farmworker and Latino issues and learn the issues they face as well.
Gettysburg College, Pennsylvania is researching materials to post or
hand out on the issue of amnesty and how 9/11 has affected immigration
laws (therefore the Latino population).
Farmworker Awareness Week is March 28-April 3rd!
