FYI USFT Members,
The Canadian Fair Trade Network is a non-governmental organization
that is in the early stages of development. The organization was co-
founded in August of 2004 and has gone through many changes and
developments. Originally, the organization was named UFT-UCE
(United for Fair Trade - Unis pour le commerce equitable). After
evaluating the status of the Fair Trade movement in Canada, we
concluded that there is a need for a coordination of the movement
that would link Canadians. We hope to fill this role.
We chose a network structure for our organization because we think
that a network structure...
- builds on the work of existing organizations
- promotes the sharing of knowledge, experiences and resources
between students, educators, school administrators, food service
providers, academics, community members, community groups,
businesses of the global South and the global North, non-
governmental organizations, faith groups and unions
- enables greater interaction on the national, regional and local
levels
- allows for collective efforts to increase the market share of Fair
Trade products in Canada, while, at the same time, it has the
potential to enhance the work of individual Fair Trade advocacy
groups
